5Nice Bowls, Confusing Descriptions!
By 10-2-Go
I, like so many others, am concerned about using plastic containers for food storage/heating. I saw these nice glass Bormioli Rocco Gelo bowls and thought they were just what I was looking for, so I ordered three sets. The Amazon.com description says the bowls can go in the microwave to warm up leftovers quickly (with the lids removed). Just what I needed! Except, when the bowls arrived, the literature from the manufacturer says, "Gelo containers are NOT suitable for use in microwave ovens...." Not what I needed! I emailed the manufacturer and received a reply in less than two hours! Wow! I asked if the Gelo bowls could be used in the microwave and if they could go directly from freezer to microwave or fridge to microwave. Their reply stated that "...the Gelo are microwave safe also if you put it from the fridge to the microwave. Remember to take off the lid before putting it into the microwave, and don't put the Gelo into the oven." So, at least I can pack a lunch of leftovers, take it to the office, put it in the fridge, and then microwave. The manufacturer's literature also states that they can be used to store food in the fridge and the freezer, but per the manufacturer's email, they cannot go directly from freezer to microwave. So, I guess if I freeze lunches for the week, I'll just take one out a day early and put it in the fridge to defrost before taking it to work. The lids fit very securely, maybe TOO securely. I envision trying to open one and the contents spewing out because I have to pull so hard on the lid to get it off! I hope not, and I'll report back on this. I'll test them to see if they leak, too. The interior dimensions are 6-1/2" x 2-1/2" deep, 5-1/2" x 2" deep, and 4-1/4" x 1" deep. Remember, they can't be used in the oven like Pyrex-type glass can. But, since I really wanted them to freeze pre-made lunches for the week to microwave and eat, the oven aspect doesn't bother me. Five stars for the bowls themselves, for Amazon's quick shipping, and for the manufacturer's amazing responsiveness. Just don't order them expecting to use them in the oven or directly from freezer to microwave.

5Least Expensive Glass Storage, Great Lid System, High Quality Thick Glass, Love Them!
By christinemm - The Thinking Mother
I have been using this set of glass storage containers for three months and both my husband and I are very happy with them. (We own two sets at this point and will buy more.)

For quite some time I wanted to switch to use glass food storage (and away from plastic) but some of the glass products on the market cost too much money. We cook and bake from scratch a lot and always have leftovers. I can't afford $10 or $15 for a single container when I have 6-8-10 in use at all times! This was the least expensive set I could find and gave it a try. We are thrilled. Here is why:

The lids are one piece of polypropolene and they are easy to clean because there are no moving parts and no tiny cracks or crannies. An old toothbrush suffices to clean inside the groove if you need to.

Other brand's containers with snap down flap type lids that we've tried have gathered food in the tiny cracks and some grew mildew. (Talk about gross!) Other times the flap thing broke and did not close the container rendering the thing useless.

(A friend bought a different brand of expensive glass containers with plastic snap down lids and her snap lid parts are breaking, she tries to compensate with rubber bands to keep it on but it's not effective for transporting food such as using to transport lunch to be eaten away from home.)

The lids are very tight fitting and airtight.

The lids are soft plastic and easy to put on and to take off. Some of my plastic containers with different types of plastic lids can be hard to snap on compared to this.

The glass part is very thick and high quality. I don't worry about them breaking during normal use. It is thick enough for me to not worry about carrying them out when packing a meal to go.

I suspect the very cold glass against the food allows it to stay fresher longer as the glass is insulating. The food is so cold after being in the refrigerator.

I like that the sides go straight up and the lids don't take up additional space. This saves space.

The top surface of the lid has a texture so it is not slippery. This is most helpful when stacking the containers on top of each other inside the refrigerator.

Other brands of containers I own have slick top surfaces and when I try to stack them with food in them or when in storage in my cabinet they slide and fall and make a mess.

If arranged in a certain order you can store the empty containers with their lids on all inside the largest one. This makes for more compact storage.

These are dishwasher safe.

I highly recommend these as the best glass food storage containers for refrigerator use and for transporting food. They are also great for storing room temperature foods such as nuts bought in bulk or storing cookies. They are the least expensive glass food storage container I have found with the best lid system.

This product page is for the 3 container set version, the manufacturer makes and Amazon also sells a 4 container set version that has one smaller container.

3Really Great Until They Break
By Grafin Lupus
I've owned a set of these bowls for over 10 years. I guess their time was up. They have been wonderful for heating and storing food. The lids seal much better than the blue pyrex plastic lids. And the red lids don't warp after washing them in the dishwasher.
BUT
My second of three just cracked while heating food in the microwave. An even crack all the way around the bowl at the level of the stew being heated. And the stew wasn't even fullly heated.
I don't think they are safe for heating.
But I really liked them until they broke.
I sure wish pyrex would make a better sealing lid.
